Sometimes the notion that the movie you’re watching is based on a true story can give it a major boost in intrigue. Sure, fictional stories can be just as entertaining, but there’s something extra exciting about watching a great story unfold knowing that it’s based on actual events.

They say crime doesn’t pay. And it usually doesn’t (because you will eventually get caught and go to prison). But what crime does do is make for an entertaining movie genre.

Sometimes horror movies take off and become major successes despite relatively small production budgets. Two of the most impressive films at the box office in 2026 fall into that category: Obsession and Backrooms. But what about quality horror movies that don’t take off the same way?
